If you are staying in Barcelona and you are looking for some of the best things to do in the area, then you should consider a trip to Montserrat from Barcelona. While the city itself is full of interesting sights, a trip to Montserrat is one that will forever etch itself into your memory. It is awe-inspiring and amazing at the same time.
Montserrat is a rocky mountain range located in the Catalonia region of Spain. It is instantly recognised thanks to its jagged, saw tooth appearance. If the mountain range isn’t impressive enough then the Benedictine Monastery sitting at the top will simply amaze you. This incredible place is considered to be one of the most crucial religious retreats in the area. Since even before Christian times, it has been religiously significant and a temple to worship Venus was built here by the Romans.
Located 45km from northwest of Barcelona, it sits at 1,236 metres high, offering amazing views of the surrounding area once you reach the top. Many people choose to hike here overnight in order to watch the incredible sunrise you can witness.
This amazing landmark and work of natural beauty will captivate you from the moment you arrive and that is why it is a popular attraction to visit from Barcelona.
What Is The Montserrat Monastery?
The monastery of Montserrat is a stunning work of art that is aesthetically pleasing on the eye. The building is an impressive example of architecture and with a setting such as this, it is no surprise as to why it is a popular place to visit.
Inside the monastery is a statue of the Black Madonna, who is the patron saint of Catalonia. The 12th-century figure sits above the high altar in the basilica. To honour her, the Escolania de Montserrat, which is made up of around 50 choirboys from the boarding school of the monastery church, sing daily. This is a mesmerising thing to see and hear if you are lucky enough to visit at the right time.

There is also a museum on site. Here you can view works of art from the likes of Dali, El Greco, Monet and Giordano. There are many archaeological finds on display. The monastery is a very poignant and important place for people to visit and it is highly regarded in the surrounding area.
How Do You Get From Barcelona To Montserrat?
If you choose to take a trip to Montserrat then it is fairly quick and easy and you have a couple of options.
Train and Cable Car
This is, without a doubt, the most scenic and fastest way to get to Montserrat. In Barcelona, from Placa Espanya take the R5 line to Aeri de Montserrat. The trip will take around one and a half hours. Upon arrival, you will need to take the cable car to the top, where you will experience amazing views.
Train And Rack Railway
This option does take longer although it does cost less. Again, catch the train from Placa Espanya in Barcelona and take the R5 line one stop further to Monistrol de Montserrat. Here you will need to make a change to Cremallera, which is a green railway that will take you to the top of the mountain.
Train And Hiking
If you feel like being a little more active, you can again board the train from Placa Espanya, taking the R5 line to Monistrol de Montserrat. From the train station, you can then walk through the town of Monistrol. Once here follow the hiking trails as they work their way up the mountain.
You can of course take the car from Barcelona. The road to the top is winding but also quicker than other options. There is parking at the monastery, but you will need to be there early to get a space. Alternatively, park at the cable car or train station.
Opting to take the bus is probably the least popular option. But if you choose to do this then you can take the bus from Estacio Sants train station for Monsterrat.
How Much Does It Cost?
Getting to Montserrat does come with several costs. These include the cost of the train, the cost of the trip up the mountain, before paying the entry fee.
The cost of the train ticket for adults is €22 and for children, the cost is €16.80. There is then the cost of the cable car or the rack railway to add depending on what you choose to take. The entry fee is €7.
However, there is a ToT Montserrat ticket that is available. This covers all travel including the train and the cable car or rack railway. The ticket also offers free entry into the museum and a free buffet lunch. Tickets for this all-inclusive offer cost €53.80 each.
