Known to be one of the smallest countries in the world, Luxembourg City does not fall short on things to do. The centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is where you can find many of the top sights in Luxembourg.
Take a Walk Around the Old Quarter
This is the best place to begin your trip. The centre of the city would have once been fortified but these were destroyed in 1883. In its place, you can find beautiful parks, gardens and tree-lined cobbled streets. Take a look at the scenic bridges and alleyways while exploring the Old Quarter in your own time.
Head to the National Museum of History and Art
Despite being very small, Luxembourg still has many museums on offer. The National Museum of History and Art is one of the best. You will find this in the Fish Market area of the Old Town Centre. Here you will be able to explore a huge array of items including tools, coins, weapons and historical documents. Much of which date back to the Gallo-Roman era.
If modern art is your thing then the display here will certainly capture your attention. There are many works here from a selection of 20th-century artists.
Explore Parc Merveilleux
Located close to Luxembourg City, this wonderful park is perfectly positioned close to the French border if you want to pop across for a trip to a different country. However, this park is also an amusement centre where you will find games, arcades, playgrounds and a train that moves around the park. This is a great place to wander around or a place to take the children if you are travelling as a family.
Embrace the Bock and the City Casemates
If canons and fortifications are your things, then Bock Cliff is where you need to be. Here you can explore Casemates which is a number of underground passages. This is a showcase of the amazing engineering work as they stretch as far as 21 kilometres and are dug out of solid rock.
The aim of the tunnels was to hide soldiers and stockpile horses and equipment. Take a walk through the tunnels. And once you get to the top of the plateau, you will find the ruins of a former castle that were only found in 1963.
Head to the Town of Echternach
Positioned on the banks of the River Sure, this quaint town is also on the border of Germany. It is a town that is known for its many festivals and celebrations. This includes the music festival that takes place from May to June.
There is also a dancing procession that happens on Whit Tuesday. A tradition that has taken place for centuries. The town has a real charm and character and plenty of history as can be seen in the medieval architecture, old-fashioned houses and winding streets.
Take a Trip to the Town of Vianden
Another town to visit, but one of the most beautiful and scenic towns in the whole of the country. Nestled on the banks of the River Our it has a stunning manor that dates back to the 9th century. The town is protected by a medieval wall that still stands strong today, including its guard towers.
The town is also the place with Victor Hugo lived when he was in exile. His home now being opened to the public. If walking or hiking are your things then there are many trails to explore here that take you into the Our Valley.
As you have probably gathered, Luxembourg is a place that is full of history and Bourscheid Castle in the village of Bourscheid will not disappoint. The village can be found on a plateau with two rivers running past it.
In the village, you will find the start of many hiking trails and other activities. But the castle is what really gives the village its charm. It dominates the village at an impressive height of 137 metres. And the castle still stands in the same location ever since it was built in the 10th century.
It has been preserved perfectly well throughout the years. To learn more about it, you can take a guided tour or an audio tour. If you want to see the castle in all its glory then it is well worth making a visit here in the evening. This is when the castle is illuminated, giving it an almost, saint-like appearance as it stands over the village.
